About

Smultronställe

Literally meaning “wild strawberry place”, is one of those words that makes learning other languages so fulfilling. In English, one would probably better translate it as someone’s “favorite place” or a place that holds deep sentimental value. Both translations are serviceable and explain the essence of the word, but neither truly captures the imagery of that place with wild strawberries. The place where the sun is shining and the wind is blowing through the surrounding field with the sound of crashing waves. The bed of strawberry bushes stretching out around you, the hundreds of red fruit reaching out for the sunlight. And in that moment, pure peace and contentment. No worries, no fears, just you and your place of strawberries.

Now, that is at least just my imagery of it, but there is so much beauty in the fact that it could have such a variety of meanings to every person. It obviously does not have to be a literal grove of strawberries, but maybe that spot you visited with your family every year as a child, or the coffee shop down the street where you go every morning, or maybe it’s just your bed. Any place that reminds you of those good things in life, the moments we treasure.

The goal of this website is really just to be another of my smultronställen. No goal of reaching anyone else, just a place for me to return to, remember the places I have been, and record the new places I went to. If you stumbled upon this, not sure how the Google algorithm got so lost, but feel free to take a look around or check back later. Hopefully I’ve remembered to come back every so often.
